REALTORS® Legislative Meetings & Trade Expo Gives Industry a Voice in Washington D.C.

RLMTE_2015The REALTORS® Legislative Meetings & Trade Expo is where NAR members take an active role in advancing the real estate industry, public policy and the association. The 2015 meetings are scheduled to take place in Washington, D.C. May 11-16 and will include special issues forums, committee meetings, legislative activities and the industry trade show.

The REALTORS® Legislative Meetings & Trade Expo is the event where REALTORS® and association leaders speak in unison on issues that pertain to real estate. It is also an opportunity for all members to address and cause change at all levels of government – federal, state and local. The trade expo will also coincide with this event May 13-14.

Following are a few highlights taking place at this year’s event:

Presentation: “Closings Are Changing: Countdown to August 1: Regulatory Issues Forum”
The rules, procedures and forms for residential real estate closings are changing on August 1. At this forum, hear details about the changes from the Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), Richard Cordray, and industry experts. Find out the best ways to prepare for the changes and ensure that your closings stay on track. Learn more about the changes and their implementation. Practical details will be discussed on Friday, May 15 at 10:30 a.m.

Industry Forum: “Window to the Law on Teams, Independent Contractors and Safety: Risk Management and License Law Forum”
This three-prong Risk Management Forum includes industry experts presenting essential information that every practitioner must know regarding legal risks associated with three hot topics including teams, independent contractors and safety.

  • Teams—learn how to properly structure team contractual relationships, non-licensed team members and other team-related liability considerations every broker must understand.
  • Independent Contractors—gain practical advice for avoiding legal pitfalls associated with worker misclassification, current litigation and terminating worker relationships without liability.
  • Safety—learn best practices for safeguarding your team members without liability, engaging safety experts and industry practitioners and weapons.

Presentation: “When, Where and How Can I Use My Drone? A Regulatory Update”
This two-part presentation includes the latest regulatory updates on the rulemaking and waiver processes required to use Unmanned Aircraft Devices (also known as drones) for commercial use, such as obtaining unique property listing photography. FAA representatives, Bill Crozier and James H. Williams, from the Unmanned Aircraft Integration Office will address developments in this topical issue, along with a REALTOR®, Douglas Trudeau, who will share his first-hand perspectives on obtaining an FAA waiver and how he is actively using a drone in his business. Bring your questions and comments and take home timely updates.

Hill Visits: Make the most of your state delegation visit with your Congressional Offices!
NAR members will be speaking with Members of Congress on a variety of issues related to the real estate industry. You can also make arrangements to participate in select events of specific interest to your business. Learn more about participating in these initiatives, as well as topics that will be addressed during the event.
